Herrin CUSD #4 is taking a major step toward energy efficiency and long-term cost savings with the installation of a new solar array. Work is now underway, beginning with tree clearing and site preparation, paving the way for the construction of the panels that will soon power a significant portion of the district’s energy needs.
The array is being built on district-owned land just behind Herrin Elementary School that, while unsuitable for building construction, was otherwise sitting unused. By putting this property to work, the district is turning an idle asset into a valuable source of energy and cost savings.
Once operational, the solar array is expected to generate substantial savings on utility costs, freeing up resources that can be redirected to student programs, classroom resources, and facility improvements.
“The district's investment in community solar is an investment in both our district's future and our community's future,” said Superintendent Nathaniel L. Wilson. “By lowering our energy costs and making use of land that wasn’t previously serving a purpose, we’re creating a more efficient and responsible school system for years to come.”
