I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. This has been a challenging year so far. I’m proud of our faculty, staff, administrators and students for dealing with all the protocols needed to enable students to attend school in person. I know that some families maybe concerned about a possible increase in COVID 19 cases after the Thanksgiving Break. If you feel it is in the best interest of your family for your children to go remote the last two weeks of the semester, all you need to do is inform your school of your decision. You will then be welcomed back to in person whenever you feel that it is safe such as the beginning of the second semester.

I reminder goes out to all students and parents that there will be no school on Monday and Tuesday. The district will be utilizing Remote Planning days on the 23rd and 24th. School resumes on Monday November 30th. We will be following the format we have had all semester through December 11th. We will follow the metrics closely each day with the possibility of going fully remote,by building. School closures will be determined by the following: 1. If we determine that COVID 19 is being spread within the school(s) or 2. If too many faculty and staff are absent and we cannot run the school(s) effectively and safely. Please do your part and help to reduce the spread of the virus by wearing a face mask, washing your hands frequently and social distancing whenever possible

Herrin CUSD #4 is planning to utilize e-learning days in place of emergency days this winter. In previous years, if weather presented a problem for the safe transportation of students to and from school, school would be canceled on what most people referred to as a snow day. With the availability of devices, hotspots, and internet, the district will be providing an educational platform on these former snow days called e-learning. E-learning will be just like our remote learning days except meals will not be available. We will attempt to notify all parents and students by 10:00 pm if a e-learning day will be used. Teachers will be notified,if at all possible, by 3:30 pm the day before an e- learning day is enacted. The school board will be discussing this issue during a public hearing on Thursday, November 19 at 5:00 pm.

The Southern Newspaper published a story in Saturday’s newspaper titled “Williamson County Virus Cases Rising.” In the article, several key metrics were incorrect regarding Herrin schools. They listed the number of students testing positive for COVID attending in person school as 231. This represents the number of students quarantined. The correct number of students testing positive for COVID 19, since the beginning of school, should read 45. The 45 students testing positive includes both remote and in person students. The article also sets the number of staff members presently out at NSPC as 6. The correct number is 16. A correction has been written online by The Southern.

As the number of individuals across the country, state, region and county contracting COVID 19 continues to increase, we are seeing a large uptick in the number of cases among students, faculty and staff. As a result of the increase, we are having a difficult time in filling in for the absences and providing an effective and safe learning environment. Parents need to be advised that Herrin CUSD #4 may need to pivot to complete remote learning on a day's notice, therefore, it would be beneficial for all parents to start looking into alternative childcare needs. Herrin CUSD #4 will be utilizing Remote Planning Days on November 23rd and 24th. These days will be non-attendance days for the students, therefore no assignments or homework will be issued. If we need to switch to complete remote learning earlier than November 23rd, the Remote Planning Days will be moved to the first day students would not be reporting to school. With the Thanksgiving Holidays coming up, I anticipate another surge of the virus as people visit with family and loved ones. The school district will be following the COVID numbers closely over the next week and through Thanksgiving. If we cannot run the schools safely and effectively, we will be switching to complete remote learning.
