Dear Parents and Guardians, Beginning February 3, students and teachers across Illinois will have an opportunity to participate in the ninth annual statewide Illinois 5Essentials Survey. This survey is designed to generate a detailed picture of the inner workings of Herrin High School. As a parent, this opportunity will allow you to share your thoughts on the important elements of school effectiveness in a survey about HHS. On behalf of the Illinois State Board of Education, the Illinois 5Essentials Survey will be administered online by UChicago Impact at the University of Chicago. The survey gathers data related to five indicators that can predict important student outcomes, including improved attendance and larger test score gains. These five indicators that affect and predict school success are: · Effective Leaders · Collaborative Teachers · Involved Families · Supportive Environments · Ambitious Instruction Prior research in more than 400 schools has shown that schools that were strong on at least three of these “5Essential” indicators were 10 times more likely to improve student learning gains in math and reading than those that were weak on three or more Essentials. All Herrin High School teachers and students will be responding to this survey. 5Essentials Reports will be generated for schools if their teachers and/or students meet the response rate threshold of 50 percent. These reports will be sent to schools and districts in May 2021 and will also be included in the State School Report Card. Additionally, Herrin CUSD #4 has chosen to provide the optional Parent Supplement survey. If at least 20 percent of Herrin High School parents complete this survey, a parent supplement report will also be generated. The parent data will not be reported on the State Report Card. Your participation in the parent portion of the survey will help us understand the conditions at HHS and guide improvement. Your identity and survey responses will be kept completely confidential and will never be connected to you or your child. The Illinois 5Essentials Survey for students and teachers will be conducted February 3, 2021 through April 2, 2021. The Parent Survey Supplement will be conducted during that same timeframe. To take the survey please visit https://survey.5-essentials.org/Illinois/ and select the appropriate survey to begin. For more information about the Illinois 5Essentials Survey, or to view previous years’ Reports, please visit https://www.5-essentials.org/illinois. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact 5Essentials Client Services at 1-866-440-1874 or impact-surveys@uchicago.edu.

Good afternoon Herrin High School Families! We hope that everyone had a safe and enjoyable Christmas and New Years. We definitely are excited to transition to 2021. This is a reminder that Herrin High School's Spring 2021 semester begins tomorrow, Tuesday, January 5, with 3rd, 4th, 6th, and 7th hours. We will maintain the same bell/daily schedule as the fall semester. Student schedules are available via the PowerSchool Parent/Student portal or with your child's advisory teacher from 8:00-8:20 tomorrow morning. We will have textbooks ready for remote learners to pickup on Wednesday, January 6 from 2:00-3:00 PM in the commons area. If your son or daughter is transitioning back to in-person instruction, please send an email promptly to Mr. Mason at kris.mason@herrinschools.org or Mrs. Williams at amy.williams@herrinschools.org, so we can update our records. Stay safe! #herrintigerpride

HHS Families, We wanted to send a second reminder to everyone regarding our end of semester steps. [An additional responsibility has been added for seniors (Class of 2021) during textbook return.] 1) For remote learners, daily check-in for attendance is 1:30 PM. Absences will be assigned to those who do not check-in within their classes' Google Classroom. 2) Textbook return is Thursday, 12/10 from 1:30-3:00 PM and Friday, 12/11 from 9:30-11:00 AM. Please enter/exit Gym A from the north parking lot. Non-returned books fees will be assigned to student accounts for lost materials. NEW: Seniors will be measured by Balfour for their caps and gowns during this time. ALL seniors must report to HHS on Thursday or Friday. 3) All assignments must be submitted by Friday, 12/11. Our guidance department will use Friday afternoon and winter break to reschedule students due to incomplete/failing grades. Students who fail an English or mathematics class will retake the course in the spring and may fall behind in their graduation progress. If a student does not pass 6 out of 7 classes this semester, he or she will be ineligible to participate in any extracurricular activity in the spring. 4) School resumes Tuesday, January 5. Please refer to PowerSchool for grade and Spring 2021 schedule information. Please continue to reach out to us with questions. Stay safe!

HHS Families, As we close out the semester, we wanted to share some important dates and times to remember. The majority of HHS's students have succeeded throughout this semester and deserve a HUGE shoutout for their resilience. 1) For remote learners, daily check-in for attendance is 1:30 PM. 3) All assignments must be submitted by Friday, 12/11. If a student does not pass 6 out of 7 classes this semester, he or she will be ineligible to participate in any extracurricular activity in the spring. 4) School resumes Tuesday, January 5. Schedules will be available in GYM A for students before school. However, we prefer that students refer to PowerSchool. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions. We hope everyone stays safe and enjoys the holidays.

Good afternoon HHS Families! We wanted to provide an update/clarification of our plans for the next two weeks. For this week (week of 11/16/2020), we are proceeding as normal with our hybrid learning schedule. There are NO changes at this time. We look forward to seeing students in person tomorrow for 1st, 2nd, Advisory, and 5th hours. For the following week (week of 11/23/2020), Herrin CUSD #4 will be using two Remote Learning Planning Days for our faculty. For our students, that means that there will be no in-person learning, new assignments assigned, or attendance taken on Monday, 11/23 and Tuesday, 11/24. These plans are highly dependent upon the health of our faculty, staff, and students. We will be in touch if our schedule must change. Please stay safe.

Good morning HHS families! This is a follow-up to Dr. Ryker's message yesterday regarding the possibility that Herrin schools may transition to remote learning for ALL students. First, if any HHS student remains in need of a Chromebook or home internet access, please see Mr. Mason this afternoon from 1:00-2:00 PM or next week. Also, we expect to run our daily schedule Mon-Thurs 8:20-12:15 via Google Meets. For all learners, 1st, 2nd, Adv, & 5th Hours will meet live M/W, and 3rd, 4th, 6th, & 7th hours will meet live Tue/Th. Teachers will post links in their Google Classrooms with instructions on how to access their individual Google Meet. Friday's schedule will remain as-is. We appreciate everyone's understanding during these crazy times. Please stay safe, and expect more frequent communication from us as additional information becomes available.
